Kindergarten has been working with shapes and lines to create our colorful clowns. We talk about the emotions that we feel when we see a clown and what colorful costumes, hair, and makeup they have. This crayon resist used crayons and watercolor as the media. We traced all our pencil lines in crayon and then painted in with watercolor. I also painted with tempera at my other school. Students tried to cover up all the space on the paper with their clown and polka dots. Patterns were used on the buttons and stripes. These creative clowns are always so colorful!

Going for the Gold at the ARTalympics!
Our team consisted of nineteen students in grades 6-8th grade. We competed in division II this year which is a team compiled of 14-24 students. We had three students receive 5th place awards, two 4th place awards, four 3rd place awards, two 2nd place awards and one 1st place trophy.

Party Over Here…
We have been studying Pop Art and the artist Wayne Thiebaud. He is a famous American painter that painted cakes and pastries with bold and exaggerated colors. Students learned how to draw three dimensional cake and cake stands. They used a horizon line to help organize space. They had to color the cake stand in cool colors and use warm colors on their cake. We discussed different cake and icing flavors along with fun toppings. Students added sprinkles to the background with oil pastels. This mixed media project turned out very colorful and the students loved creating cakes with a slice missing.
It’s T-Shirt Time!!
All Dressed Up
2nd graders studied the artist Peter Max and his crazy ties, colors and patterns. Using symmetry, students created a long sleeve shirt and colored it using complementary colors. Students could add a pocket with their name and we discussed how their shirt then became asymmetrical. They loved creating the symmetrical ties and looking at all the crazy patterns we could add.
Look What is Springing Up!
With springtime here, the 1st and 2nd grade students have been drawing objects that are springing up. The 1st grade worked on learning how to draw a border around their paper with a ruler. We chose to color in the border using warm colors. We used Eric Carle’s style of painting for the body of our caterpillar and primary colors for the face.
The 2nd grade did a crayon resist project. They had to draw a flower that touched all sides of the paper. We discussed the parts of a flower and created interesting lines in the center and background. Students traced all their lines using a black crayon and then colored using secondary colors and watercolor pencils. They are amazed that when you add water, the color pencil turns to paint!
